The answer to this depends on which Item Ratings system you're using, so first check your template settings to see if you're on "Classic" or "Custom" ratings:
Item Completion with Classic Ratings
If you're using Classic Ratings, an item is marked complete if it has been 'touched' (i.e. you tapped into the item to view the comments within it or changed the rating) AND:
It is marked "NI" or "NP"
-OR-
All non-checkbox (i.e. Multiple Choice, Text, Number, Date, etc.) informational comments within the item have been answered
Keep this in mind when building your template and choosing the answer types! To switch to Classic Ratings and restore automatic completion:
Navigate to Templates → My Templates.
Select your template from the dropdown.
Click the three dots (⋮) on the right and choose Template Settings.
Open Item Ratings.
Click Use Ratings (Classic Ratings will be selected by default).
Optionally, set a default item status.
Save your changes. Templates using Classic Ratings will auto-complete items when appropriate, while Custom Ratings require all informational fields to be filled.
Item Completion with Custom Ratings
If you're using Custom Ratings, an item is marked complete if:
It has been 'touched' (i.e. you tapped into the item to view the comments within it or changed the rating)
- AND -
All non-checkbox (i.e. Multiple Choice, Text, Number, Date, etc.) informational comments within the item have been answered
This means that Item Ratings don't matter in the Custom Ratings system! So your informational comments should either be deleted or have an N/A option for when they do not apply. Checkbox-only comments or items without required fields are marked complete once opened and moved past. Selecting a rating does not determine completion when using Custom Ratings.
Overview
In order for an item to show green/checked and completed all informational comments that require an answer need to be filled out in order for the item to show completed. All items need to be completed in order for a section to show completed.
Strictly check-box informational comments don't need to be answered, but any other answer types: Multiple Choice, Text, Number, Date, Numeric Range, and Signature require an answer.
If you want an item completed but don't want an informational comment on the report simply delete it or add an N/A answer that you can use as needed. Enable the Require completion to publish setting to ensure all required items and sections are finished before publishing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my item showing green and completed? I didn't do anything!
If you have no informational comments that require an answer then simply clicking into the item will cause it to show completed. There is currently no way to undo this.
How do I unmark an item showing completed?
If you have informational comments that require an answer you can uncheck the answer, and then it will revert back to being incomplete. If you do not have informational comments that require an answer, simply clicking into the item will display it as completed and there is no way to undo or unmark it.
As a work-around, if you have an item that is displaying completed but you still need to work on it, flag a comment so that you're reminded to come back to it!
Sections Not Marked Complete
If a section is not marked complete:
Verify that all required informational fields are filled out.
Check for blank or unselected Info/limitation comments and either fill them out or remove unnecessary blank comments.
Ensure the template settings align with your desired completion behavior (e.g., Custom Ratings vs. Classic Ratings).
