What Is This Migration?

Frequently Asked Questions

The Transition: What's Happening and Why

  • Why is Carson Dunlop retiring Horizon?

    • The inspection software market has evolved rapidly with mobile technology, automation, integrations, and AI-powered tools. While Horizon has served customers well, staying at the forefront requires significant ongoing investment and dedicated technology focus.

    • Carson Dunlop concluded its resources create greater value in the areas where it has a distinct advantage — education, inspector training, industry expertise, franchise development, and customer support — rather than proprietary software development.

  • Why is Carson Dunlop recommending Spectora?

    • After evaluating multiple platforms, Carson Dunlop determined Spectora offers the strongest combination of innovation, usability, support, and long-term investment — including modern mobile-first reporting, AI-powered productivity tools, ongoing product development, and a strong support infrastructure. Spectora is providing dedicated 1:1 onboarding at no cost to every Horizon user.

  • Is Carson Dunlop going away?

    • No. Only the Horizon software product is being retired. Carson Dunlop as a company continues offering inspector training, education, franchise development, and industry support.

  • Will Horizon keep working while I set up Spectora?

    • Yes. Horizon remains fully available until December 15, 2026. You can set up Spectora at your own pace, run test inspections, and switch over when you're ready.

Getting Started on Spectora

  • How do I create my Spectora account?

    • Click "Migrate to Spectora" in your Horizon dashboard. This creates a unique signup link and starts your data migration in the background. You can also start a free trial at spectora.com with 2 free inspections, no credit card required.

  • How long does setup take?

    • Most inspectors complete their first real inspection in Spectora within a couple of weeks. The data transfer itself (comments, contacts, agents, etc) usually finishes within about 30 minutes, and Spectora notifies you in-app when it's ready to review.

  • What is Express Onboarding and am I eligible?

    • A free 45-minute, 1-on-1 video call with a Spectora specialist covering account setup, services and fees, agreements, payments, and a full platform walkthrough. Included at no cost for all Horizon users — you'll need an active paid Spectora subscription before scheduling.

  • I have multiple inspectors on my team. How does that work?

    • Migration runs at the company level, so templates and setup come over together. After migration, you can invite additional inspectors by email.

Pricing and Discounts

  • How much does Spectora cost during the migration?

    • Horizon customers migrating to Spectora get 50% off their first 6 months ($55/month) or first year ($545/year). Standard pricing is $109/month or $1,090/year for a solo inspector. Offer valid through January 31, 2027. For more information, book a call with our sales team here.

  • Is Spectora more expensive than Horizon?

    • Horizon and Spectora are priced differently, and what you get is different too — interactive web-based reports, 24/7 online scheduling, built-in payment collection, AI-assisted report writing, and the Repair Request Builder. Inspectors consistently report saving 1–2 hours per inspection.

  • What is Spectora Advanced and do I need it?

    • An optional add-on — Horizon customers get it at $3/inspection (the standard rate is $4), including automated agent marketing sequences, agent relationship tracking, business analytics, and upsell tools. If you used Horizon Marketer for agent outreach, Advanced covers similar ground — but most inspectors don't need it right away.

The Migration Process

  • What data transfers to Spectora?

    • When you migrate, your comments and presets, company name and logo, client contacts, agents, team members, and select special forms all transfer.

      A few details worth knowing:

      • Comments & presets — all of your Horizon comments and presets (location, cost, etc.) import into a single template in Spectora, ready to use or customize. Comments that were hidden in Horizon are preserved too — you'll find them under an item called "Hidden" on that template. Your Horizon template structures don't come over as separate templates, but since everything you've written arrives together, nothing is lost. You'll also see association templates already added to your account: InterNACHI & ASHI for US inspectors, or CAHPI for Canadian inspectors.

      • Client contacts — an email address is required to transfer. Contacts missing an email will show an error code — review these after migration.

      • Special forms — forms with a direct Spectora equivalent transfer automatically (TREC, 4-Point, Wind Mitigation, and others).

Services and fees, agreements, booking options, email automations, historical inspection reports, report PDFs, photos, existing bookings, payment processing, and third-party integrations like ISN do not transfer and will need to be set up fresh in Spectora.

Make sure to export your historical reports and photos from Horizon before December 15, 2026 — once Horizon shuts down, that data cannot be recovered.

  • Can I re-run the migration if I make changes in Horizon afterward?

    • Yes. Go back to the migration screen in Horizon and select "Update Migration" — this runs a fresh export and replaces the previous import in Spectora.

  • Is my data secure during migration?

    • Yes. Data transfers through a secure process developed jointly by Carson Dunlop and Spectora, using industry-standard security measures. Migration only occurs after you provide consent and initiate the transfer from Horizon.

How Spectora Works

  • Does Spectora have the illustrated diagrams Horizon included?

    • Spectora doesn't have the same illustrated diagram feature Horizon had. If this is important to your workflow, reach out and we can talk through your options for bringing key visuals into your reports.

  • What about Horizon Marketer — does Spectora have automated marketing?

    • Spectora's base plan includes automated email and text notifications tied to every inspection — confirmation, follow-up, and review requests. For broader marketing campaigns similar to Horizon Marketer, reach out and we'll walk you through what's available.

  • Does my payment processing transfer from Horizon?

    • No. Spectora uses its own payment system, Spectora Payments, powered by Stripe. You'll set up a new account — keep access to your current payment provider for historical records and tax reconciliation.
