Smart layout is a helpful feature available in your template and report settings designed to optimize the appearance of your final PDF report by minimizing unnecessary white space. When activated in your PDF display options, the smart layout setting adjusts the arrangement of comments based on their size, rather than their order in the editor or template.
If you notice that your comments look different in your report editor versus the report itself, it's likely that smart layout is enabled.
Here's how it works:
Comments with fewer than 70 characters and no pictures are grouped together at the beginning of each section.
Next, comments with fewer than 70 characters and one picture are organized.
Finally, comments with more than 70 characters or multiple pictures are placed at the end of the section.

What Does Smart Layout Look Like in My Report?
With smart layout enabled, your short-form comments (like multiple-choice comments) are grouped together in 3 columns at the top of the section. Longer comments and comments with photos are full-row (meaning they extend the full width of the page) and grouped together at the bottom of the section.
In essence, enabling smart layout ensures that your comments are sorted and presented in a logical and visually appealing manner within the PDF report, enhancing readability and overall professionalism.
